Not Pinterested

Do you ever stop to think about how real the internet is? How something so apparently intangible can affect your life in a very tangible way?

Well, this week, Eline Pellinkhof blogged that one of her designs had been copied and was for sale and there is very little she can do about it.

I also remember other things I've seen online, where designs have been copied and sold and there is little or nothing to be done. Small business owners, designers, artists, crafters... not being properly credited for their work, and maybe losing money, because of copyright theft.

Real things that affect real people.

Then, also this week,  I read a post on Carina's Craftblog, an article titled Pinterest - not the innocent pastime you may think, which also led me to a bunch of other writings on this subject.

Wow.

Pinterest could become a big problem. For me and for you, if you use it.

Here's why, in a nutshell.
  • According to Pinterest's Terms of Use, I may only pin images if I own the copyright or if I have written permission from the copyright owner to make use of their image
  • Once I pin something to Pinterest, I give Pinterest exclusive rights to the image and they can do pretty much whatever they want to with it.
In other words, if I pin an image belonging to somebody else, without their express permission, I am breaking copyright law and falsely giving Pinterest a royalty-free licence.

Oh crumbs, it's such a confusing and complicated issue that I have decided two things for now - (I may add to this later.)

  • I have deleted my Pinterest account and gone back to saving any images I like in my own folders on my own computer, for my personal use/inspiration only.
  • I will only use my own images on my blog - (something I generally do anyway) and am looking into watermarking things I don't want someone else to claim ownership of.

I have barely touched the surface of this issue here - it runs deep and I merely wanted to flag it .... so here's a few links to some great articles worth reading:

I know my action in deleting my Pinterest account is drastic but until Pinterest does something to solve the problems and make it less of a mess, I wont be back there. I don't need that kind of potential hassle, as remote as it may be.

The suggestions made by the LINK With Love project is that you only pin images from their original source, or repin only if the pin links back to the original source. Also, make an effort to get the image owner's permission, especially if you plan to put an image on your blog.

Share images, but share them correctly. That seems the way forward.

However even that doesn't address the issue of Pinterest's exclusive rights to all pinned images - so you can maybe see why I am not pinning anymore. It's too convoluted to follow - a spaghetti ball of random loose ends.

I hate that it could have real consequences for me, down the line.

So that's where I'm at.  Not Pinterested anymore.

** Edited to add:

If you are worried about images being pinned from your blog, you can prevent this by adding a simple piece of code that is available on the Pinterest website, under the Help section, then under "Linking to Your Blog or Website."

If someone tries to pin from your site they will receive a message saying you don't allow it.**

  1. Interesting post Wendz.......I don't have or want a pinterest account, but being nosy I had a look at one of the boards from a blog link to see what all the fuss was about, and guess what I found.......a couple of my own crafty makes pinned for all the world to see, there was a link back to my blog, but I had no idea I had been pinned and it does feel a little uncomfortable..........I sometimes have a wobble and think the same thing about blogging..........I love to blog, no doubt about that, but then you always wonder who you're letting into your little world and who's reading...............hopefully just lovely like minded people.......but of course there's no guarentee of that, is there?

    1. No there is no guarantee at all. This is why I try to keep my blog more about my makes and charity shop buys rather than anything too personal - there are some mean bods out there, who don't care about the person behind the blog.

I wouldn't mind if one of my photos was pinned but I would mind it Pinterest tried to make money off it. And as you said, you have no way of knowing.

So the whole thing makes me uncomfortable.

  2. I have never been interested in Pinterest or anything other than using my computer for emails and the occasional blog, writing and reading of others worth reading - there are so many not worth the time! I am dubious and anti putting too much information about myself out there in the public domain, which is why I only use my real name email address with friends or people I trust. Otherwise I use one that has a fictitious name. Sorry that you feel annoyed by the negatives about Pinterest, but wise I think, to make the choices you have.

    1. I wouldn't say I am annoyed - just thoroughly confused and concerned and uncertain as to what's the right thing to do. So that's why I deleted my account. Also, like you, I don't really enjoy putting to much of myself on the internet - I've got a certain amount of reticence and wariness I suppose.

And honestly, I am a bit relieved not to be able to sit and waste hours looking at images and pinning them anymore. It's a serious time waster and yet it can be hard to control the urge - it's almost an addiction.

  3. Hi Wendz - this was such a thought provoking post. I must say I have sometimes thought about this sort of thing as well. The couple of occasions I've posted paper dolls I've made myself I've wondered about the possibility that someone might take and sell a version of them and I would be none the wiser. I've never been interested in Pinterest but I many just take a look at it now to get an idea of what happens there.

I also wanted to let you know that I've tagged your blog in a book tag. You can get more info at http://sharonssunlitmemories.blogspot.com/ Probably not the best timing based on what you have just said!! If you feel at all inclined to participate though I'd be interested to read your answers as you always express your feelings so well - Sharon

    1. There's always the possibility that someone could take your designs and pass them off as their own, and not even bother making any changes to it. How would you know unless someone spotted it and told you? (Which does happen sometimes.)

Oh Pinterest - heavens you might fall in love with it. :)

  4. Thanks Wendz, you have helped me to make up my mind, I am one deleted cookie on Pinterest. Such a shame as it was lovely to get inspiration from it but it was sucking up my time and I think I spend enough enough time on the net as it is. Have you ever visited Annie at Knitsofacto.blogspot , she has also posted an interesting blog post about the dreaded Pin ! xox Hope you are still wallowing in your gleeful Indefinite leave to remain! x

    1. Thanks - I hadn't seen that Knitsofacto post but have since read it and it says everything way better than I have. It also confirms my concerns are valid. The whole thing is a bit sickening, isn't it!

And yes - still tres tres gleeful about my settlement status. More so now than the other day because it has sunk in now. I find myself in a shop or walking down and a street and I say to myself, "Whee! I belong here now!" :)

  5. Very thought provoking and slightly worrying as i've recently joined Pinterest myself, and am quite addicted already! (Yes it is a BIG time waster I completely agree!)

Think im gonna go have a read of Terms now.

    Thanks for this post.

    1. Yes maybe just have a think about it, and perhaps have a look at the images you've pinned and try to clean up the links so they reflect the source properly?

Good luck with the terms of use - man that was a headache to wade through!

  6. Very interesting post, never thought of this and will certainly be checking out the other articles. Ive only just joined pinterest but i havent really found it that exciting and havent really been on there much. My addictions seem to lie in shopping! Scarlett x

    1. I've been reading more and more as I find other articles and nothing I've seen has persuaded me to get back on the Pinterest train again. Not even so-called 'responsible' pinning. There's just too much aggro involved in the whole thing. *sigh* It's a pity.

  7. I've never gone down the pinterest route but your post has really made me think. Thanks so much for pointing out these pitfalls, I'm worried now about images from my blog that have been pinned.

  8. Oh heck Wendz, you've just burst my Pinterest bubble! I love it so much, but it does get madly addictive and I have thought to myself, 'how many images do I need?' To link back to the original source, although the right thing to do, may make it too time consuming for many. Mmm I have some thinking to do! Thanks for bringing it to my attention. I do sometimes get swept along with things without really thinking through the consequences. Have a lovely relaxing Sunday, love Linda x

    1. I know - it's a bit of a bummer. Well maybe all this will do is slow down pinning so it's more selective and not just the mad, random pinning of anything and everything - being on Pinterest can be a bit like being a kid in a sweetie shop. You just want to grab everything in sight. :)

I think my broadband download limit will thank me for giving up Pinterest!

  9. I have only ever noticed Pinterest lurking on the periphery of my vision and, as I already spend far too much time in the ether, have never investigated it further. I hardly ever tweet on twitter or faff about on Facebook any more either - all far too time consuming. I do use other people's product photographs on my blog occasionally - for instance I have a 'Saturday Selection' feature where I talk about somebody's product or shop that has impressed me - but I always link the photograph back to the person's Etsy shop and also send them an email with a link to the post and an offer to remove it if they have any objections.
I suppose, once something goes online in any shape or form, an Etsy shop, Flikr etc, it is vulnerable to being copied.
Anyway, I'm with you on your decision and I'm not even going to go and check Pinterest out - just in case it lures me in.

    1. You know, Pinterest is a great place for eye candy - I ended up there today after following a link and was struck again by just how many wonderful images and creative people there are. But yes what a way to lose hours!

I think if you link back images on your blog properly it's OK. Most Etsy shop owners love the free advertising anyway.

It's that Pinterest ownership of images thing that freaks me out - it just doesn't seem logical or right.

  10. Hi, I received this post in my inbox this morning - very interesting! However, I have just spent the last hour trying to put the HTML code into my blog to stop people pinning from it! I can't do it - what am I doing wrong? I go to Pinterest, copy the code, then go to Blogger and "add a gadget" - paste the HTML code, then it should work?? I've tested it though and it doesn't. I've tested yours and it does! Please help ... Jules. PS: I'm also going to change all my images on my blog, I really had no idea about any of this Pinterest issue! J.

    1. Jules, the html code doesn't go in a gadget. You have to go the html view of your template and place it in the head section.

I've just spent half an hour on Pinterest again - looking at stuff, but not having an account anymore I am not pinning anything. It's still a cool place to visit. :)

  12. I know a lot of my images from my blog of the caravan have ended up on pinterest. It's flattering but also rather annoying as I have no control over it xx

    ReplyDelete
  13. It is rather flattering and potentially a great way to market and advertise things - it's just the whole copyright ownership and right to use issue that puzzles me. I'm sure this will get resolved though - it's too much of a minefield to leave it so wide open.

  14. Wendz - I keep trying to comment on this but my laptop has had other ideas. Very interesting post, I've seen a few articles making related points - mainly about how people are taking credit for other people's ideas. Of course, this has gone on in blogland for years - I've seen tutorials etc reproduced word for word, but Pinterest is certainly going to normalise design theft and make it more widespread - I can see why people who make their livings from craft might be worried. Yes it drives traffic - but your exclusive design could be seen and reproduced on the other side of the world and you'd be unlikely to know. I admit that like many people, I obviously disregarded the rather worrying small print about handing over copyright to Pinterest. This is very dubious legally.

A few things from my blog have been pinned and I'm fine with that - but in the highly unlikely event of money being made from one of my pictures/concepts I guess I might think differently! Of course, there are always ways to lift images from the internet, with or without Pinterest or the simple right click. Food for thought.

    1. Mmm... all of this is headache-inducing, huh! :)

I've thought and thought about it and just decided to relax and let it be - I am not a Pinterest account holder anymore, I don't put other peoples images on my blog, so I really have no worries.

As for design theft - what goes around comes around. I firmly believe that.

  16. Hi Wendz, many thanks for your comments. I am not sure about the boiled eggs and beans and tomato for breakfast, but that's what makes life interesting, that we are all different! I can't believe we are almost at the weekend again, is it me, or is time spinning out of control. Thankyou for your comments on my pics, I am trying to improve my photography. Have a lovely day, love Linda x
